Breakfast in the United States

Breakfast in the United States is much different than breakfast in Brazil. The portion of food we commonly eat is much larger than the breakfast that is eaten here in Brazil.

Like in Brazil, it is very common to drink coffee with your breakfast, or tea, but we also have an array of things that we eat and drink. Many people drink fruit juices in the morning, like orange juice. We also very commonly eat eggs prepared in many different ways, accompanied by 2-3 other options, depending on the family. Pancakes and waffles are very common, and we eat those with a sweet syrup,

called maple syrup. We also eat a type of bread, that is called French toast, and this sometimes comes with maple syrup on top, or other options, like powdered-sugar, and a fruit option, like strawberries. Bacon and sausage are very common meats to eat during breakfast time and they usually are derived from pig. We also eat variations of potatoes, prepared in many different ways.

There are also healthier options, like avocado toast, smoothies, green juices, and varieties of fruits that people eat for breakfast. In the state of California, in San Diego, where I am from, it is also common to have Mexican inspired dishes for breakfast. The reason for this is San Diego is on the border with Mexico. An example of a Mexican inspired breakfast dish, is something called a “breakfast burrito.” This is made up of a tortilla on the outside, with scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese and a meat of your choice rolled into one. Many times breakfast burritos are eaten with a spicy “salsa,” the Spanish word for sauce, and it usually derived from various chili peppers.
