In the United States, Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays. There are various traditions that are common for almost all American children, and then there are others that vary depending on the families religious beliefs.

From the time of childhood, many children grow up hearing stories about Santa Claus. A man who is supposed to fly around in a sleigh, guided by reindeer, distributing gifts to children. Often times, children will leave a plate of cookies and a glass of milk waiting for Santa on Christmas Eve, for him to enjoy when he arrives. They will also read bedtime stories about Santa coming before going to bed, and parents will tell their children to be good, because it is legend that Santa only gives gifts to good children. The naughty children are said to receive coal in their stocking, instead of sweets. 

Amongst Catholic and Christian families, this is a time of deep religious significance. This is the time when the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world, is celebrated. Many families will go to mass the night before Christmas, or have a candlelight service, where they light many candles. This is a time where they remember the importance of Jesus being born, and they use candles to symbolize Jesus because He is called the light of the world. Some families will even make cakes to sing, “happy birthday,” to Jesus. Many people  decorate their homes with displays of the wise men, Virgin Mary and baby Jesus in front of their homes and inside as well.

It is very common for both religious and non religious people to decorate their homes with Christmas lights, to have a Christmas tree, and to eat a large meal together with friends and family. Often times children are allowed to open one gift the night of Christmas Eve. People also donate gifts and food to those who are poor and have less money during this time. Christmas time is definitely one of the most beautiful times of year, and a time where people are more generous and kind.
